The Grand Canyon Skywalk at Grand Canyon West Celebrates One Year Anniversary

To Commemorate The Public Opening, Skywalk Buy One Get One Free Vouchers Will Be Given To Those Who Book Reservations In Advance For March 28

Last year on  March 28, 2007 thousands of people lined up to be some of the first to experience the Grand Canyon Skywalk, 4000 feet above the Canyon’s floor as Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Astronaut, did during the “First Walk” ceremony eight days earlier.  In celebration of this historic event Grand Canyon West will offer this one time only buy one get one free Skywalk admission voucher for visitors that book though the reservations department for visits on March 28, 2008. Reservations can be made at www.destinationgrandcanyon.com or by calling 1-877-716-WEST(9378).

Since the opening of the Skywalk, the daily number of visitors to Grand Canyon West has quadrupled, rising from 500 per day to more than 2000 per day. The Skywalk’s popularity has helped Grand Canyon West grow tremendously resulting in hundreds of new job opportunities for the Hualapai people and countless improvements to the destination that enhance the visitor experience.

“The Hualapai Nation has been plagued by poverty and unemployment for decades,” said Wilfred Whatoname, Guest Relations at GCW and member of the Hualapai Tribe. “The Skywalk is proving to be a success and is paving the road to an independent future.”

“The Skywalk has not only succeeded in bringing people to Grand Canyon West, it has renewed interest in the Grand Canyon as a whole,” said Allison Raskansky, Marketing Director for Grand Canyon Skywalk. “It’s been a great year and there is more to come for Grand Canyon West including the completion of the Skywalk visitors’ center later this year.”

During the public opening ceremony one year ago the Skywalk was blessed by members of the Hualapai tribe and the thousands of visitors stepped out onto the glass walkway 120 at a time. The first people to walk on the structure were a couple from Baltimore, Maryland who were originally just on a business trip to Las Vegas.

“If you were anywhere near this area, it would be a big mistake not to come here [Skywalk],” said Benson Rice, the first person of the general public to walk on the Skywalk on the day of the opening. “It was definitely worth the trip.”

LA Sunset Tan gained national exposure in 2006 when Haman, Bozz and Rudolph together developed a twelve-episode reality series documenting the foibles of the tanning salon industry called “Sunset Tan.”  LA Sunset Tan at Palms Place will be the first salon located outside of California. Most recently, LA Sunset Tan launched a nationwide franchise business resulting in over 1300 requests and securing more than 140 units in the first month following the announcement. The Da Vinci Experience

The Da Vinci Experience at the Henderson Events Plaza

Some Experiences are not to be missed and if you’re an art lover, the Da Vinvi experience is one of them.

The exclusive exhibit of Leonardo da Vinci’s remarkable inventions and copies of his most famous paintings, currently on display at the Henderson Events Plaza, will close out its temporary run Sunday, March 2, 2008. Since the opening of the exhibit in October 2007, Las Vegas and Henderson area school students and teachers, local residents and out-of-state visitors have been able to see firsthand the wonders that Da Vinci created and the impact his works had on modern day life.

“The Da Vinci Experience has proven to be a very popular attraction and great addition to the array of cultural and art events offered by the City of Henderson,” says Andrea Primo, interim director, Department of Cultural Arts and Tourism for the City of Henderson.  “This particular exhibit offers a hands-on educational experience unlike any other in Southern Nevada and we hope everyone will come out for their last chance to see for themselves Da Vinci’s incredible inventions.”

All of the replicas in the Da Vinci Experience were designed from Leonardo’s notebooks, which contain more than 13,000 pages of notes and drawings, and were recreated using the same materials and techniques that would have existed in his time – 15th and 16th centuries. The replicas are organized in three viewing galleries: transportation, military and mechanical. Visitors get a chance to see prototypes for the first bicycle, the first car, the first helicopter and the first parachute, among others.

Copies of Leonardo’s original drawings and sketches can be found in close proximity to the replicas enabling visitors to compare the sketches with the models. In addition, many of the exhibit’s designs are interactive so both children and adults can understand precisely how the groundbreaking machines accomplish their work.

Other features of the Da Vinci Experience include a theater showing a short film about Leonardo da Vinci, a gallery housing replicas of many of his paintings, and a gift shop.

The Da Vinci Experience is located at the Henderson Events Plaza in the Water Street District at 200 South Water Street and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday through March 2, 2008.

Nevada residents pay a special ticket price of $8.50 per person; children six and under are free. Clark County School District teachers who present a valid CCSD ID are admitted free of charge. Local and out-of-state school and/or youth groups of ten or more are $5 per person. The adult admission ticket for out-of-state visitors is $17 per person. Tickets are available at the exhibit. For more information call 267-4TIX or visit www.HendersonLive.com.

Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art

New Exhibit, “American Modernism,” Opens at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art

The cultural landscape has once again changed at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art with the February 8th opening of its latest exhibit, “American Modernism,” which will be on display through October 15th. Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), the exhibition features masterworks by American modernists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Arshile Gorky and others.

The engaging retrospective of carefully chosen art showcases more than 30 of the MFA’s most renowned paintings. The period of Contemporary Modernism began at the turn of the 20th century and reached its pinnacle between World War I and World War II. During this time, celebrated artists such as O’Keefe began experimenting with painting by offering a subjective take on the traditional matter of still life and landscape. American Modernism favored artists who explored the natural world with abstract forms. Bold, new and controversial, some modernists died poor and unknown while others became wealthy stars of popular culture.

Some of the works in the exhibit include “Red Tree, Yellow Sky” and “Deer’s Skull with Pedernal,” by Georgia O’Keefe; “Frozen Brook, East Arlington, Vermont” by Jay Hall Connaway; “Hillside Near Gloucester” by Stuart Davis, “Black Duck” by Marsden Hartley; “Good Hope Road” by Arshile Gorky, “The Red Table” by Niles Spencer; “New Orleans #7” by Ralston Crawford,” and “Three Literary Gentlemen” by Max Weber.

Bellagio Conservatory

BELLAGIO’S CONSERVATORY & BOTANICAL GARDENS
USHERS IN CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH DRAMATIC EXHIBIT

Striking New Display Incorporates
Ancient Art of Feng Shui to Welcome Year of the Rat

bellagio conservatoryOn January 14, Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens began celebrating the 2008 Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rat, with a unique display filled with hidden meaning. The Conservatory’s design is guided by the ancient practice of Feng Shui – the art of using surroundings to attract harmony, balance and positive life energy.

The dramatic centerpiece of this exhibit is found perched atop an oversized, flowering branch.  Here, a botanical, 5-foot-tall rodent watches guests with an inquisitive eye.  The auspicious rat’s lush coat is made of red Alternanthera, a low-growing herb, with a touch of pink Hypoestes, a tropical plant.  His long curling tail and delicate whiskers are made of metal.

Legend has it that Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year.  Twelve came.  The rat is revered for its place as first in the Asian zodiac and is a symbol of renewal. Those born in the Year of the Rat tend to be intelligent, charming and practical.

year of the ratJust steps away from Bellagio’s delightful rodent ambassador, an 18-foot-tall Chinese God of Wealth and Fortune, is found amidst gleaming I-Ching coins, a traditional Chinese money symbol.  Widely recognized as the strongest symbol of good fortune in China, the God of Wealth and Fortune is flanked by two Ming Dynasty-styled dings, ancestral vessels that protect against bad luck.

Nearby, visitors will find a zigzag bridge leading to a beautiful, wing-tipped gazebo painted a deep red lacquer with shimmering gold trim and green-tiled roofs.  The color red signifies happiness while the upturned roofline wards off evil spirits and the sharp pattern of the bridge protects against negative energy and bad spirits. A majestic mountain, seen as a pillar between heaven and earth, serves as a dramatic backdrop.

The teachings of Feng Shui also are used to purposely position the flow of water into Bellagio’s Conservatory, and not away from it, ensuring the flow of positive energy.  From a tranquil Koi pond to a shimmering waterfall, water denotes the larger world we live in while carp signify good luck and everlasting good fortune.

Visitors are invited to celebrate Chinese New Year in Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens January 14 through March 15.

SPOTLIGHT: JW Marriott Spa

JW MARRIOTT LAS VEGAS RESORT & SPA ENHANCES THE SPA EXPERIENCE WITH NEW OUTDOOR AMENITIES AND SERVICES

spaWith the addition of the Aquae Sulis Garden, renovation of the spa pool and reintroduction of Watsu Massage, spa guests can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Mother Nature.

Ok. so we all know that it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature. But while the weather outside may be frightfully chilly at the moment, that doesn’t mean that sun- and spa-lovers can’t take a walk on the wild side and enjoy the new beautiful outdoor happenings at the Aqua Sulis Spa at the JW Marriott.

The spa recently introduced the 3000 square foot Aquae Sulis Garden, a private, multi-purpose venue where guests can meditate, enjoy a good book and partake in one of many fitness classes offered outdoors, weather permitting. From Yoga and Tai Chi to Belly Dancing and Hula, the class options are endless.

spa fitnessThe horticulture team at JW Marriott Las Vegas used over 19 different varieties of plants in the garden design, including herbs and fruit trees. Several different ornate grasses were incorporated, in addition to seasonal garden beds bursting with color.

Since the theme of water runs throughout Aquae Sulis, a pond and three-tiered fountain were introduced. The river bed running through the garden displays over six tones of imported river rock and a flagstone pathway invites guests to meander the pathways throughout. The final touch to the garden is a hand-crafted bridge designed by the resort’s carpentry team which connects the walking meditation path to the grassy areas.

Aquae Sulis Spa’s hydrotherapy pool renovation includes all new pool plastering, pumps, decking, furnishings and plants. “We wanted to open up the pool deck area and make it more inviting to our guests,” says Aquae Sulis Spa Director Melissa Robinson. “We are proud of the fact that we have the only hydrotherapy pool in Las Vegas and are one of only two spas in the nation, therefore enhancing this amenity was very important to us.”

spa soakHydrotherapy, formerly called hydropathy involves the use of water for soothing pains and treating diseases. Its use has been recorded in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. The soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water make it a safe, ideal environment for gentle exercise and the six invigorating chambers of the hydrotherapy pool offer relief and relaxation to the body.

The final compliment to Aquae Sulis’s outdoor experience is the re-introduction of Watsu. This treatment is available year-round as the outdoor private pool is heated at 98 degrees, a perfect temperature in summer or winter. With Watsu, the massage therapist cradles the body as a sequence of gentle movements and stretches are performed. This treatment is perfect for relieving stress while opening the heart and quieting the mind. Supported by water, one moves with the rhythm of one’s breath in ways impossible on land, resulting in greater flexibility and freedom.

salon at spaAs Robinson notes, “We wanted to provide our guests with the ability to participate in therapies beyond an ordinary day spa experience. Watsu was at one time offered at Aquae Sulis and we felt strongly that it needed to be available to our guests.” This 60 minute treatment is priced at $160.

HOLIDAYS IN VEGAS
Las Vegas Goes Homey for the Holidays
By Bobbie Katz

Ok, so there’s no denying that there is a perception of Las Vegas during the holidays as a city where you’re more apt to see a Candy Cane hanging from a stripper pole than strung across a fireplace mantel, more likely to hear slot machines ring than sleigh bells and the dry landscape is a case for “treeson.”

But while it’s true that it’s a desert out here and that it’s not easy being green in the foliage sense, there is another side to the city that depicts its generous spirit and its desire to be a home (or a home away from home) for the holidays. Some Las Vegas businesses and organizations go out of their way each year to spruce things up and bring the season and cheer to the Valley. So you’d better not pout, you’d better not cry, you’d better not shout, we’re telling you why – Santa Claus IS coming to town, courtesy of the following folks:

Carolers Sing, Can You Hear Them?...

Nowhere is there more Opportunity to experience the magic of the holidays than at the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village. Now in its 16th year, this is one event where you can definitely see the forest for the trees when it comes to the” heart” of the season.
What began as a small event with a few decorated trees that raised $3,000 has
now grown into an annual tradition that includes a two-acre decorated forest with hundreds of pine trees and thousands of lights, an antique carousel, a passenger train, an Alpine Slide and choirs/carolers. Last year, more than 150,000 people visited the Magic Forest, the event raising $1.4 million for the non-profit Opportunity Village’s programs and services.

Hot chocolate and funnel cakes abound and local pastry chefs create fabulous one-of-a-kind gingerbread houses for display. Guests can purchase raffle tickets and enter
to win the gingerbread house of their choice; there are raffles for holiday gift baskets as well. There are costumed characters, photos with Santa, and the gift Cabin, which features a variety of items, including holiday-themed ornaments and other small gifts.

The Magical Forest also features nightly entertainment provided by local groups
of dance teams, church choirs, local school groups, concert bands, swing bands and local professional performers – this year Zowie Bowie, who appear regularly at Red Rock Resort & Casino, will perform on December 21. And speaking of celebrities, you may have a chance to rub elbows with the likes of Celine Dion, Andre Agassi and Mayor Oscar Goodman, who visit the forest each year to support this important cause, which is serving Las Vegas residents with intellectual disabilities, helping to enhance their lives and the lives of their families.

Opened to the public on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, and operating nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. through December 30, the Magical Forest charges a general admission, which is $9 for adults and $7 for children under 12. There is also a small fee for the rides -- $ 3 for the Forest Express Train, $2 for the antique carousel and $1 for the Alpine Slide. There is a Passport available ($14 for adults and $12 for children 12 and under) that provides entry to the Forest and unlimited rides. It’s your ticket to true holiday spirit.

…In the Lake, Ice is Glistening

For a way to celebrate the holidays that is truly cutting edge, you’ll want to head out to Lake Las Vegas Resort at MonteLago Village – only 30 minutes from Las Vegas -- where you can really dig your heels (and toes) into the spirit of the season.

That’s because the resort is running circles around other Las Vegas locales where uniqueness is concerned with its Floating Ice skating Rink. For the fourth year in a row, this Rockefeller Center-sized (60’ x 90’) rink, which actually floats on the surface of the 120-acre lake, offers the nostalgia of the season along with the backdrop of desert scenery. In fact, the attraction has become so popular that it opened on November 16 at 8 p.m.– the annual Lake Las Vegas Resort tree lighting took place at 7 p.m. that night followed by a concert – and will remain open through February 17 at 9 p.m., allowing lovers to enjoy a romantic Valentine’s Day on ice.

This is one place where you can be a cheap skate and take pride in that fact – the cost is only $15 per person, $12 for children 12 and under, to skate all day. (There are also season passes and group rates available.) Hours of operation vary. About 60 people can be on the rink at one time and if you’re wondering how ice is made and maintained in the desert, the key here is an environmentally friendly glycol mix that runs through plastic tubes and freezes the water, similar to a very large standard refrigerator. It takes about a week to hook everything up and create the ice.

Even if you are wearing shorts and T-shirts to skate in while working on your tan, Santa Clause will be making a stop at MonteLago Village this year. He will be at the Gazebo on December 1,2,8,9,16,17,22 and 23 and kids can visit with him free of charge between the hours of 12 p.m.-4 p.m. He will also be at the Ritz-Carlton for the “Santa’s Workshop” event, which will take place December 1& 2 from 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m; December 8-9, December 16 and December 22-23 from 11:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. “Santa’s Workshop” costs $45 per person and $38 per child under 12 and includes cup cakes, cookies, sandwiches, holiday activities and more.

MonteLago Village is also offering a special lodging package created around the ice rink. Called the Holiday Skate, Stay & Shop package, it starts at $64.50 per person, based on double occupancy, and includes one-night accommodations in a luxury studio condominium and a welcome bonus book at check-in with discounts at MonteLago Village shops. It also includes skate rentals and ice skating.

It’s a great way to glide into the holidays.
For more information on the holiday season at MonteLago Village, call 866-399-2753.

It’s a Beautiful Sight, You’re Happy Tonight, Walking In a Chocolate Wonderland

If you’re looking for a white Christmas in Vegas, you just might have to settle for the chocolate variety. And how bad is that? It’s not often you can celebrate in a place where you can have a freshly handmade chocolate ball melting in your mouth instead of a snowball melting in your hands. But at the 14th annual ethel’s/Ethel M Chocolate Wonderland, located at Two Cactus Drive in Henderson, the season is delightfully sweet, what with its three-acre Botanical Cactus Garden transformed into a festive treat for holiday-goers amid the sights, scents and savory tastes of the milk, dark and white confection.

And let there be lights --- 500,000 of them illuminating the cacti pathways. Crews start putting the lights up in early October to get ready for Santa’s arrival on November 21. Through December 22, visitors will be able to see Jolly Old St. Nick every Friday and Saturday from 5-9 p.m. Also, on Friday and Saturday from 5:30-7:30 p.m., they can enjoy the sounds of local choirs from Kathleen and Tim Harney Middle School (Nov. 30), Greenspun Middle School (Dec. 1), Cinderella Christmas Choir (Dec. 7), TBA (Dec. 8), Silvestri Middle School ((Dec. 14), Stars Vocal (Dec. 15) and Gibson MiddleSchool (Dec. 21).

The ethel’s/Ethel M Chocolate Wonderland is free as are the chocolate tours given at the adjacent chocolate factory where guests can see how ethel’s/Ethel M Chocolates are hand-crafted, using time-honored methods and only the finest ingredients. Award-winning Chocolate Chef Jin Caldwell and her team are preparing an abundance of special holiday creations, such as Peppermint Bonbons (three piece collection --milk, dark and white pieces in each box, $6.00), Peppermint Bark (creamy white chocolate sprinkled with peppermint candy and trimmed with a layer of dark chocolate – three for $8.00), a milk chocolate boot with 14 milk chocolate foiled balls ($12.00), Tower collections (16-piece dark chocolate collection - $21.00; 24-piece collection -- $30.00; both - $50.00), and Sam, the plush reindeer.

All these, plus lots more delights, will be available in the chocolate lounge throughout the holiday season. Chef Caldwell will also display her chocolate sculptures during the holidays as well. It’s the perfect place to “lick” any holiday doldrums.

Here Comes Santa Claus

Opportunity Village is hosting another annual event that’s guaranteed to have you “seeing red”-- in a good way. On December 1, its internationally recognized Las Vegas Great Santa Run, a family-friendly 5K run and one-mile walk, will leave from Fremont Street at 10 a.m., with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. And here’s the rub – runners, walkers and folks from all over the world will all be dressed in Santa suits and will attempt to break the World Record for “Largest Santa Gathering” established in the Guiness Book of World Records by Liverpool, England.

In fact, Opportunity Village is so determined to beat this record that they have purchased 20,000 Santa suits and have obtained a “secret” weapon – the Opportunity Village IT Girls – to recruit participants. There will be vendors, displays, live entertainment, contests and prizes. Register online at www.opportnityvillage.org or call Melissa Husby at (702) 880-4055 for more information. (You can also register to join the Siegfried & Roy team.) The fee to participate is $45 for adults and $25 for children under 12 (before December 1).

The House That Ginger Built

There will be lots of cooks “stirring the pot” this season at Lake Las Vegas this season when the resort holds its 2nd Annual Gingerbread House Competition celebrating “The Holidays Around the World.” Chefs of all ages and abilities are invited to toss their hats into the ring and submit a homemade, completely edible gingerbread house for a chance to win cash and prizes. There are four categories of competition – Youth (ages 12 and under), Teen (ages 13-17), Home Cooks and Culinary Students, and Professional Cooks. Entries must be submitted by November 26 and completed houses must be delivered to the resort on November 29 or 30, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The winners will be determined by special guest judges. All of the crafts will be on display in the Ritz-Carlton and Loews hotel lobbies from December 1-22. Call 702-564-1600 for more information.

There are other fun holiday activities going on in town as well. You might want to check out Mt. Charleston Lodge, where there’s food, a great fireplace, live music, and warm drinks like their Mt. Charleston coffees. With luck, there will be snow up there, too, which means you can take (for a small fee) a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest and mountains. (Otherwise, it’s a stagecoach ride!)

Some of the ranches around the area also do holiday things. Sagebrush Ranch, in particular, does a holiday horseback ride through the mountains each year – the horses are decorated with Christmas lights and folks sing carols (you can be on the wagon --, literally --if you’d rather). Afterwards, it’s a campfire dinner followed by the roasting of marshmallows.
Of course, if all else fails to turn on your Christmas lights, you can go to one of the casinos in town and sip away the holidays with one or more of their holiday beverage creations.

SPOTLIGHT: Red Rock Canyon

PHOTO VISIT:

If you’re looking to get into the real rock scene in Las Vegas, then jump into the car and head out to spectacular Red Rock Canyon. A 20-minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip, the towering sandstone bluffs are majestic to a fault – the Keystone Thrust Fault, a fracture in the earth’s crust that is the most significant geological feature of the canyon.

Scientists think that some 65 million years ago, two of the earth’s crustal plates collided with such force that part of one plate was shoved up and over younger sandstone through the fault. This thrust is clearly defined by the sharp contrast between the gray limestone and red sandstone formations.

The centerpiece of the canyon is a stunning sheer escarpment of banded red, white and gray rock more than 13 miles long and almost 3,000 feet high. It is incised with numerous deep canyons formed by snowmelt and rain runoff that eroded the rock along cracks in the brittle cliffs.

Perennial springs and seasonal streams encourage lush vegetation, which contrasts with the dryness of the desert floor.

A first stop should be the Red Rock Visitors Center (1000 Scenic Drive; 702-363-1921). Inside, a recorded self-guided tour takes you through the geological and wildlife history of the area. Park rangers will answer your questions and nature books are on sale.

Once you leave the center, you’ll want to take the 13-mile Scenic Loop, for which the Bureau of Land Management charges $5 per vehicle. Open to traffic daily from 7 a.m. to dusk, several vista points offer panoramic views of the incredible rock formations where you can park the car and get out There are also 30 miles of hiking trails at Red Rock. Highlights of the area include Calico Vista, Sandstone Quarry, Ice Box Canyon, Pine Creek Canyon and Red Rock Wash.

Directions from the Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) or Downtown (Las Vegas Boulevard). From Las Vegas Boulevard, go to Charleston Boulevard and head west about 8 miles until you reach Red Rock. You’ll see signs for the Visitor Center and the Scenic Loop.

SPOTLIGHT ON: COMEDY CLUBS
Did You Hear this One?

A very funny thing happened to Budd Friedman on his way to fulfilling his vision of showcasing up-and-coming talent.

He created an empire – just for laughs.

For years, Friedman’s string of world-famous Improv Comedy Clubs has provided hours upon hours of hearty chuckles in locales all over the country, including at Harrah’s Las Vegas.

Spotlighting the funniest and freshest faces in comedy, each week three new talents perform in the 350-seat custom-built showroom at the hotel in a show that is always different and unique and that packs a real punch-line.

“Harrah’s is definitely a casino with a flair for fun and excitement, and when guests visit the Improv, that’s what they’re going to get,” promises Friedman.

Friedman opened the first Improv in 1963 on West 44th Street in New York City, and it quickly became synonymous with the exclusive venue for rising comedy acts.

In the 1980’s, Friedman hosted the TV show, “An Evening at the Improv,” which brought stand-up comedy into homes across the nation, and he also began expanding his club’s domain. Some of the biggest names in comedy were launched at the Improv, including Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler and Drew Carey. It continues to reign as America’s Original Comedy Showcase.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Valley of Fire State Park

Set Your Soul on Fire

By Bobbie Katz

If you’re looking for an experience that is truly out of this world, you only have to travel about 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas via I-15 to see the first signs. Follow them and you might think that you are on Mars when you first gaze upon the jagged limestone mounds of fiery scarlet, vermilion and mauve that rise out of the Mojave Desert to comprise the Valley of Fire State Park.

Dedicated in 1935 as Nevada’s first state park, the 56.000-acre Valley of Fire takes its name from its distinctive coloration. The red sandstone formations that make up this surreal scene were formed by great sand dunes during the Jurassic Period. Complex uplifting and faulting in the region, followed by 100 million years of erosion, have carved this six-mile-long and four-mile-wide crimson-hued valley in the desert. In the process, water and wind have shaped the land into arches, domes, spirals and serrated ridges. Many of the area’s rock formations have been weathered into unusual shapes resembling elephants, beehives, ducks, cobras, people, pianos and more.

Valley of Fire is famous for its petroglyphs, ancient rock art left behind by the prehistoric Basketmaker people and Anasazi farmers – who are believed to be North America’s earliest inhabitants – who lived along the Muddy River between 300 BC and AD 1150. At Petroglyph Canyon and Atlatl Rock, visitors can see the rock art up close.

Another point of interest is Mouse’s Tank, named for a local Native American who hid from the law there at the turn of the century. The large rock catchment, or tank, at the trail’s end, catches and preserves rainwater, providing an oasis for wildlife. Interesting rock formations include the Beehives, Seven Sisters and White Domes.

Besides sightseeing, hiking, rock hunting, camping and picnicking, there are other things you can enjoy here. Stop at the Visitor Center on Highway 169 in Overton (open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily; 702-397-2088) to get the lowdown.
