As the summer travel season begins, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reminds travelers that coming to the checkpoint prepared for the security process will lead to shorter lines and less travel stress.
Passengers can actively improve the security process by being ready. Following these three steps will help everyone get through the security process faster:
1. Show ID and boarding pass.
2. Take out liquids (in a baggie) and laptops.
3. Take off shoes and jackets.
TSA is using a standardized list of acceptable identification for airline travel. Passengers who present a federal or state-issued photo ID containing name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature that is free from evidence of tampering can expect to be expedited through the travel document checking process. Standardizing the list of accepted documents better aligns TSA with other DHS components and REAL ID benchmarks.
Passengers should remove their government-issued photo ID from wallets, plastic holders and other similar carrying cases, and present the ID along with their boarding pass at the start of the screening process. Hold on to the boarding pass until through the magnetometer, where it may need to be shown again.
Take out liquids (in a baggie) and laptops. Large liquids are still banned from carry-ons. Remember the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, gels and aerosols at the checkpoint:
-- 3-ounce bottles or less for all liquids, gels and aerosols placed in
-- 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag;
-- 1 bag per passenger placed separately in a security bin for X-ray screening.
The liquid restriction applies only to carry-on bags. Passengers can pack larger quantities of liquids and gels in checked baggage. Laptops must be taken out of their cases and placed in a separate bin for X-ray.
Take off shoes and jackets. Removing footwear for X-ray screening is required. Wearing footwear that can be easily removed helps speed the process. Please also put your jackets and
sweaters in the bin.
“We recognize that the liquid restrictions and shoe removal are pain points for the public but they are necessary security measures based on current information,” said Kip Hawley, TSA administrator. “Passengers can help the process by being prepared and recognizing that our officers are there for your safety. Please cooperate with our officers because your safety is their priority.”
TSA is in the process of deploying more than 200 new technology units at the nation’s largest airports in time for summer travel. This technology includes multi-view advanced technology X-ray and millimeter wave, a form of whole body imaging technology. The airports receiving new technology in the coming weeks include Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Detroit, Las Vegas, Washington-Reagan, Denver and others.
Multi-view advanced technology X-ray gives the security officers a better look at what is in carry-on baggage and has the potential to speed up the process because fewer bag checks will be required. The other advantage to multi-view X-ray is the equipment can be upgraded as new software algorithms are mastered. A total of 600 of these machines will be deployed during 2008.
Millimeter wave enables TSA officers in a matter of seconds to detect weapons, explosives and other metallic and non-metallic threat items without physical contact. This technology will primarily be used in a random continuous protocol.
If a passenger declines to go through the millimeter wave portal, he or she will be subject to alternative screening measures. These are the first significant additions to checkpoint technology since the walk through metal detector and standard X-ray machines were introduced in the 1970s.
For more information on what to expect, tips for people with special needs, and
what you can bring, visit the TSA Web site at www.tsa.gov. |

NIGHTS WITHOUT NEON AND MOONLIGHT SPA TO LIGHT UP SUMMER EVENINGS AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, LAKE LAS VEGAS
Late night -- minus the bright lights -- will offer all-age nocturnal activities 17 miles from the Las Vegas Strip
Las Vegas summer nights no longer need bright lights and flashing neon to “come alive.” The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas has unveiled a new all-night-adventure program appropriate for children and adults, couples and families and nocturnal merry-makers of all ages. Among other pleasures, the menu of never-before-offered night activities will include a heavens-driven “Moonlight Spa” available nowhere else in the world.
Nights Without Neon puts “early to bed” to rest. Summer guests of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas will now be able to experience close-up the nocturnal beauty of Nevada’s high-desert, as well as new recreation and dining options designed specifically for the area’s balmy summer nights. The resort’s Nights Without Neon menu includes the following à la carte adventures, offered from May 1 through Labor Day 2008:
Moonlight Spa. An exclusive al fresco experience offered only seven nights of the month: three nights during the waxing phase of the moon, once during the full moon, and three times during the moon’s wane. Since man’s earliest days, lunar phases have played a role in physical well-being, and The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas Spa offers three exclusive bodywork experiences inspired by lunar effect. These special treatments are experienced on the shores of the resort’s private lagoon, bathed in moonlight unobstructed by Las Vegas city lights. They are based on the applicable moon phase, inviting guests (individuals and couples alike) to connect to the natural rhythms of the moon above. During the waxing phase, gravity feels at its most intense, and deep therapeutic massage is combined with gentle stretching to relax the body and clear the mind. Contemplating personal goals is recommended during the waxing phase. A full moon signifies energy, and Moonlight Spa during this lunar energy period includes an invigorating massage with special attention to the scalp. Guests can take advantage of the intense energy of this phase to manifest their goals. When the moon finally wanes, surrender and calm prevail; the moon is in retreat, and the guest can retreat as well. Light, relaxed, soothing massage is performed at this time, employing delicate aromatherapy blends. Paying special attention to pressure points on the hands and feet will help guests surrender during this time of calm. Moonlight Spa guests will receive a crystal representing the phase of the moon under which they experience their outdoor treatment. A HOT Ticket at the Cannery
He may not be performing until May 17 but folks are already jazzed about the upcoming appearance of seven-time Grammy® winner and crossover legend, Al Jarreau, at The Club inside Cannery Casino & Hotel. Jarreau will be joined by special guest, Stanley Jordan’s Trio. Tickets went on sale on March 21.
Tickets start at $24.95 plus tax and fees and can be purchased at the Cannery Casino & Hotel’s ticket sales counter located at the front desk. Tickets are also available for purchase by calling (702) 617-5585 or (866) 287-4643 (toll free), or by visiting www.cannerycasinos.com.
Jarreau’s unique vocal style is one of the world’s most precious treasures. With numerous international music awards and popular accolades worldwide, Jarreau’s innovative musical expressions have made him one of the most exciting performers of our time. Some of Jarreau’s most memorable hits include the theme song to the popular television series, “Moonlighting,” “Mornin’,” “After All” and “We’re In This Love Together.” Whether singing classical jazz and standards, pop hits or R&B ballads, Jarreau’s incredible voice will give the audience a show they will never forget.
Jordan came to prominence with the release of his 1985 debut album Magic Touch, a revolutionary project that placed him among the most distinctive and refreshing new voices of the electric guitar. The key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special “tapping” technique on the guitar’s fret board instead of conventional strumming and picking. Some of Jordan’s best known work includes singular versions of “The Lady In My Life,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Georgia On My Mind” and Jordon’s original “Plato’s Blues.”

MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris Announces
The Winners Of The First Ever American Auditions
LAS VEGAS – March 7, 2008 – MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris and special guest judge, Dita Von Teese announced the winners of the cabaret’s first ever American auditions at Tabú Ultra Lounge Thursday, March 6. More than 50 dancers vied for a spot in the elite dance troupe, but after a three-day audition process, four women were chosen to join the Crazy Horse Paris family. The winners are Krystle Richeson from Virginia Beach, VA; Elena Lee Rodriguez from Miami, FL; Polina Volchek from Las Vegas, NV and Kara McKinney from Roanoke, VA. The winners will be flown to Paris, France, where they will receive formal training for two months before joining the dancers on the famed Crazy Horse Paris stage.
Photo cutline: (from left to right: Krystle Richeson, Crazy Horse Paris guest judge Dita Von Teese, Elena Lee Rodriguez, Polina Volchek, Kara McKinney)
Each of the women chosen have come from different cities around the United States but their common bonds have been their love of dance and admiration for Crazy Horse Paris. Kara McKinney recently graduated college with a double major in International Studies and Film & Photography. With no professional dance background, she auditioned for the show on a whim. Krystle Richeson’s resume included a three-year stint as a Radio City Music Hall Rockette before quitting the business to gain a degree in business management. The Crazy Horse Paris auditions is the first show she had tried out for in more than three years. Lee Rodriguez is originally from Barcelona, Spain and is half Korean and half Spanish. She had heard about the auditions a few days prior to the start and dropped everything to take part. Polina Volchek, who is a native of Moscow, Russia, is a competitive rhythmic gymnast and can be seen performing a variety act in the upcoming season of “America’s Got Talent.”
This will mark the first time American dancers have become a part of the internationally renowned Parisian dance troupe. To become a member of the renowned cabaret is to become a part of its history. Since its inception in 1951 in Paris, Crazy Horse has been a cultural phenomenon offering unique shows that engage the eye as much as the imagination. Crazy Horse shows rely on raw body talent and beauty rather than technology and combine sensuous choreography with various luminary and projection effects to create a moving canvas of skin, where reflections and images meet in a kaleidoscope of colors and textured designs. With the success of the Crazy Horse in Paris, the creators decided to open a second show in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, in June 2001.
MGM Grand’s Crazy Horse Paris performs nightly at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., dark Tuesdays. Guests must be at least 18 years of age to attend the show. Ticket prices begin at $49 including tax and can be purchased at MGM Grand ticketing outlets, by phone at (702) 891-7777 or online at www.mgmgrand.com.

702 SERIES: STEPHEN HENDEE, BE MY SUICIDE
February 20 – April 27, 2008
LVAM Members’ Preview Reception: February 19, 5-7 pm
The Las Vegas Art Museum (LVAM) is pleased to present the exhibition 702 Series: Stephen Hendee, Be My Suicide, a new site-specific installation by Las Vegas-based artist Stephen Hendee. The exhibition will be on view in the LVAM Studio Gallery from February 20 through April 27, 2008. The LVAM Members’ Preview Reception will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 from 5-7 pm. Stephen Hendee will host an experimental sound performance utilizing new musical instruments, designed and played by the artist during the Members’ Preview Reception at 6pm.
Entitled Be My Suicide, the exhibition will examine the darker recesses of Stephen Hendee’s evolving sculpture and installation practice. Most striking is Hendee’s decision to strip all color from his installation and only work in black and white. Presented as a series of enigmatic site constructions, digital objects, and images within the Studio Gallery space, the exhibition will pose the question to viewers: "When nothing compels us more than to loose everything we care for, whose suicide is it?"
Stephen Hendee has lived in Las Vegas since 2004, when he began his tenure as Assistant Professor of Sculpture in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Originally from Santa Monica, CA, he studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute and received his M.F.A from Stanford University in 1993. Known for his room-size, luminous installation pieces, Hendee has recently exhibited at the Nelson Gallery at University of California—Davis; New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT; Birmingham Museum of Art, AL; and Kemper Museum Of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO.
Stephen Hendee, Be My Suicide is the third installment in LVAM’s ongoing 702 Series, which features solo exhibitions by artists who were born or raised in Las Vegas, who initiated their careers in Las Vegas, or who presently live and work in the our city. The series showcases works by artists who represent Las Vegas in the broader national and international art communities.
702 Series: Stephen Hendee, Be My Suicide is made possible by LVAM’s Joyce Mack Exhibitions Fund and James and Michelle Zeiter Exhibitions Fund. Additional support is provided by a Cirque du Soleil Community Support Grant for the Visual & Performing Arts.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a brochure that features an essay on Hendee’s work by noted author and theorist Sylvère Lotringer, who serves as Professor of French Literature and Philosophy at Columbia University.
The Las Vegas Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and is closed Mondays. General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 55 years and older, and $3 for students 13 years and older; children 12 and younger enter free when accompanied by an adult.
